How to remove an object from a photo

1. Click Remove something from a photo and choose a photo. The Remove brush opens.
2. Paint over the object. Adjust Brush size, and use the Eraser to fix the marks.
3. Tap Remove. The area fills in from the surrounding image.
4. Not perfect? Tap Undo remove, adjust the marks and try again, or remove in smaller pieces.

How it works

Remove uses content-aware fill. It searches the rest of the photo for patches that match the edges of the area you painted, and builds the fill from them, working from coarse to fine detail. It runs entirely in your browser, so your photo is never uploaded.

What it's good at

• People, signs, poles, litter and other small or medium objects on natural backgrounds.
• Dust spots and scratches on scanned film.
• Blemishes, stray hairs and small distractions.
• Areas surrounded by grass, sky, water, sand, walls or foliage.

Getting the best result

Paint a little beyond the edges of the object, including its shadow. For large objects, remove them in two or three smaller sections. Fill works best when the photo has similar texture elsewhere to borrow from; it struggles with faces, text and long straight lines running through the area.
